Position Overview
The Chemistry Laboratory Instructor is responsible for delivering comprehensive laboratory instruction, assessment, and oversight of students within the chemistry lab environment. This role includes the preparation of materials in alignment with the curriculum set forth by the Chemistry faculty. The instructor is dedicated to providing exceptional service to all stakeholders involved.Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Instruction and Demonstration:
- Conducts instructional sessions related to the laboratory aspects of college-level chemistry courses.
- Demonstrates proper equipment usage within the laboratory setting.
- Instructs students on essential safety protocols.
- Supervises students during lab sessions, ensuring adherence to safety regulations.
- Develops and implements effective strategies to enhance student learning experiences.
- Evaluation of Student Performance:
- Assesses student submissions and performance in relation to laboratory course requirements.
- Determines and assigns final grades for laboratory work.
- Offers additional support to students outside of scheduled lab hours for coursework assistance.
- Preparation of Laboratory Materials:
- Evaluates new information to determine its relevance in enhancing student learning within the lab.
- Designs and administers laboratory quizzes and examinations.
- Maintains and updates laboratory manuals and instructional materials.
- Creates supplementary educational resources such as posters and information sheets.
- Researches and develops experiments for student engagement.
- Additional Duties:
- Maintains accurate records of laboratory grades and student performance.
- Sets up and ensures the functionality of laboratory equipment and demonstrations.
- Participates in the review and revision of laboratory materials and manuals.
- Stays current with developments in chemistry and laboratory instruction.
- May perform duties of Laboratory Technician II as necessary.
Qualifications for Success
- A Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from an accredited post-secondary institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong understanding of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance, along with safety protocols relevant to the Chemistry lab, including WHMIS.
- Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and courteously with students, faculty, and staff.
- Proven skills in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques and maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of chemistry.
- Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism.
