As a Rail Transportation Coordinator at Graymont Limited, your key responsibility will be to oversee the movement of materials to external clients and storage facilities, ensuring the prompt delivery of both loaded and empty covered hopper cars. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining a steady supply to customers while effectively managing Graymont's yard capacity, both on-site and at storage-in-transit locations.
Key Responsibilities:
Railcar Oversight
Monitor and track the status of Graymont's loaded covered hopper cars during transit; collaborate with railroads and other stakeholders to address any issues. Notify internal operations and sales/customer service teams of any delays. Keep track of and communicate any changes to transit times due to performance issues or unforeseen operational challenges (e.g., environmental incidents, strikes). Process diversion and re-bill requests for both loaded and empty railcars. Manage individual covered hopper cars as needed through a prioritized list. Ensure that empty railcars are billed correctly and issue new billing as necessary for fleet realignment or maintenance. Support investigations and resolutions for customer supply reliability complaints. Collaborate with internal teams to identify opportunities for enhancing supply reliability. Monitor the usage of railcars both on-site and in transit; coordinate with railroads, customers, and storage providers to optimize the movement of empty and loaded covered hopper cars, minimizing demurrage exposure and improving equipment utilization. Escalate significant issues to both Commercial and Operations Management as required. Submit requests for repairs on railcar bad orders. Railcar Data Management Maintain accurate railcar master data in relevant systems, including railcar specifications and maintenance schedules. Document applicable rates for empty and loaded rail movements. Assist in resolving invoice discrepancies related to logistics services, including rail rate issues and demurrage. Support the Senior Transportation Specialist – Rail with purchase order administration for empty moves, leases, and repairs. Develop and maintain reports on covered hopper car performance for key stakeholders to enhance tracking and delivery efficiency. Maintain vendor profiles, including essential contact information and capabilities. Assist the Senior Transportation Specialist – Rail with the preparation of monthly reports, KPIs, and account reconciliations. Continuous Improvement Initiatives Identify and propose enhancements for delivery performance through data analysis. Collaborate with the Logistics Manager and Senior Transportation Specialist – Rail on carrier negotiations and various projects aimed at reducing costs and improving transit times. Monitor KPIs to ensure targets are consistently met. Analyze service gaps, recommend solutions, and implement agreed-upon actions. Provide backup support to the Supply Chain team as needed. Complete and maintain route determinations for rail transport.Required Qualifications:
3-5 years of experience in rail operations; experience with bulk rail shipments is preferred. A Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or Business is highly preferred. Strong initiative and motivation to understand business operations and pursue value creation opportunities. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences. Solid financial and business understanding. Adaptability and flexibility to thrive in a dynamic work environment. Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and time management skills. Effective communication, negotiation, and collaboration abilities. Experience with railcar tracking software is advantageous. A strong commitment to safety practices. Proven ability to work independently. Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
