Position Overview

The Principal Engineer for Planning is a pivotal senior-level position that entails providing technical guidance, executing the strategic vision of the AESO, enhancing the organization’s engineering capabilities through mentorship and talent development, and promoting collaboration across various functions to drive business success with a focus on technical proficiency and strategic insight.

In this role, the Principal Engineer for Planning will be tasked with delivering strategic insights, leadership, and vision regarding system planning to ensure the AESO meets its long-term objectives of maintaining a reliable and economically viable transmission system. Collaboration with the Chief Engineer, fellow Principal Engineers, leadership, and both internal and external stakeholders will be essential in addressing all aspects of long-term planning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic guidance on the AESO's system planning framework and methodologies.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the Transmission Regulation and engage in policy discussions relevant to ongoing grid transformation.
  • Lead the creation of a new cost-benefit analysis framework to assess the necessity for economic transmission expansion.
  • Oversee technical and reliability aspects of transmission planning activities with a long-term focus of 20 years.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to ensure reliability considerations are integrated into planning.
  • Build relationships with Transmission Facility Owners (TFOs) and industry partners to facilitate effective coordination of long-term planning initiatives.
  • Lead the interpretation and application of new legal and regulatory requirements, representing the AESO in regulatory proceedings.
  • Identify long-term system risks and develop methodologies to mitigate these risks.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to incorporate system planning into broader AESO initiatives.
  • Maintain oversight and support for competitive process transmission projects.
  • Serve as the standard owner for all planning-related Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO rules, leading the AESO team during audits.
  • Participate in industry working groups to advocate for the AESO's perspectives and ensure alignment with industry standards.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Distribution Facility Owners (DFOs) regarding the coordination of their long-term plans with transmission strategies.
  • Stay informed about industry development trends.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) and active membership with APEGA required.
  • A minimum of fifteen years of engineering experience in the electric utility sector, particularly in transmission planning, power system operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of Alberta's electricity sector regulatory framework, AESO Tariff, reliability standards, and economic principles.
  • Experience in leading effective engineering teams and managing strategic relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with the transmission development Need Application approval process.
  • Proficient in applying analytical and evaluative skills to integrate technical knowledge with strategic planning.
