Job Title: Education Assistant - Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke). As an Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, including autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support students in various classrooms, including those with autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.
  • Implement adapted or modified curriculum, as needed, to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems to facilitate student learning.
  • Assist students with daily living skills, such as feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
  • Implement daily exercise programs under the direction of an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.
  • Monitor and record student behavior, as required, and report any concerns to the principal or designate.
  • Support students' academic goals and objectives, as outlined in their Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Requirements:
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field, or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
  • Familiarity with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Care Plans, an asset.
  • Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to read and respond to emails, view Word and Excel documents, navigate the internet, and use web-based applications.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
  • Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all, and contributes to a positive working environment.
  • Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully using oral, written, and visual formats.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and proactively plans, prioritizes, and organizes work.
  • Respects the confidential nature of all information relating to students, parents, and staff.
Working Conditions:
  • Works in a school setting, with occasional travel to other locations.
  • May be required to physically assist students using lifts and transfers.
  • May be required to support transferring students on and off buses.
  • Walks or runs, indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions.
