Position Overview

The Parks Department is seeking skilled Tree Workers to join our team. This role involves the safe and efficient pruning, removal, and maintenance of trees throughout the District.

You will play a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of our urban forest, contributing to the aesthetic appeal and environmental well-being of our community.

Responsibilities
  • Perform tree hazard mitigation work, including pruning, removal, and chipping of trees using ropes, safety harnesses, power saws, and hand tools.
  • Utilize rigging, winching, and cutting techniques to safely remove trees of various sizes and species.
  • Plant, stake, fertilize, and mulch trees as needed.
  • Identify and report indications of hazardous trees, pests, and diseases.
  • Operate a truck and chipper to transport materials to and from work sites.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of tree care practices, tools, and equipment.
  • Experience in safe climbing techniques (SRS, MRS, spurred) at heights.
  • Skill in rigging ropes and associated hardware.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of native and non-native tree species identification.

Completion of grade 12 schooling supplemented by post-secondary or other recognized courses related to arboriculture/urban forestry, and considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. OFA Level 1, recognized chainsaw certification, ISA certification (or equivalent), and relevant SkilledTradesBC certification (or equivalent) are assets.
