Job Overview:
A Traffic Control Specialist, also known as a flag person, refers to workers who stop, slow and safely direct the traffic through work or construction sites. Traffic Controllers regulate the traffic flow trying to get as few delays as possible. They give directions and signals clearly, so motorists understand how to proceed. Traffic Controllers also guarantee workers protection and ensure their safety.
Traffic Controllers must have completed a training and hold a certificate which guarantee that they are competent to perform the required procedures to control traffic.
Key Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively with motorists to ensure a smooth traffic flow
- Utilize hand signals, radios, and other methods to direct traffic
- Anticipate and provide clear indications to drivers at appropriate distances
- Collaborate with other Traffic Control Specialists
- Remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings
- Guide cyclists and pedestrians safely through the work zone
- Maintain focus and avoid distractions
Requirements:
- Basic mathematical knowledge
- Attention to detail
- Awareness of the environment
- Ownership of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); other PPE such as glasses, half-face or full-face mask, gloves are preferred
- Safety consciousness
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
