The Maintenance Department at VIA Rail, tasked with the upkeep and assessment of our train fleet, is on the brink of an exciting evolution.
With a new fleet being introduced, shifting workforce demographics, and multiple ongoing projects, our maintenance facilities are set for a significant transformation.
We invite you to join our team as a Controller Supervisor, where you will play a pivotal role in guaranteeing the safe and efficient functioning of train services.
Reporting directly to the Senior Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating operations within the Maintenance Center rail yard, ensuring adherence to high safety and efficiency standards, while supervising locomotive attendants and forklift operators.
This dynamic role necessitates flexibility to work various shifts based on operational requirements, physical capability to meet job demands, strong supervisory skills to manage multiple tasks concurrently, and a readiness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Directs, plans, and oversees rail equipment movements and train preparations at the Maintenance Center in collaboration with the Operations Control Centre, ESC, and other relevant departments. You will also coordinate third-party work and serve as the primary contact for inquiries. As the first responder, you will ensure the execution and application of the Maintenance Center's Emergency Response Plan;
- Sets priorities and supervises the activities of locomotive attendants, classified laborers, and trades personnel involved in train preparation, while considering all yard operations such as snow removal and maintenance programs. You will oversee freeze-up protection personnel to ensure all passenger cars are safeguarded against freezing;
- Acts as the authority on the shift for any CROR clarification needs and serves as a resource for the locomotive attendant teams under your supervision;
- Coordinates and supervises the fueling of equipment, ensuring adequate fuel for planned travel. The Controller will act as the project supervisor and enforce the fuel conservation policy at the Maintenance Center.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma is required;
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a similar role;
- Experience managing teams in a unionized environment is essential;
- Familiarity with Transport Canada Railway regulations is preferred;
- CROR 105 rules certification is mandatory;
- Strong communication skills to provide clear and precise instructions;
- Good understanding of safety, quality, and environmental policies and procedures;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite is required;
- A valid driver's license (Class 3) is an asset.
