Position Overview:
The Law Society is currently seeking a full-time Auditor to join our team. Reporting to your team lead, your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting Compliance Audits in accordance with the Law Society's regulations.
- Assessing lawyers' adherence to trust accounting rules and identifying potential misconduct or misuse of trust accounts.
- Reviewing law firms' records for compliance with the Legal Profession Act, Law Society Rules, and the Code of Professional Conduct for British Columbia, while identifying potential fraud and money laundering.
- Utilizing data analytics and professional judgment to evaluate key focus areas and implementing additional audit procedures as necessary.
- Interviewing lawyers and accounting staff, asking pertinent questions throughout the audit process.
- Conducting complex investigative audits in areas of significant concern, including anti-money laundering.
- Working independently to ensure timely completion of work that meets high-quality standards.
- Writing concise, impartial, and factual reports of audit findings.
- Communicating findings and providing feedback to lawyers regarding compliance and non-compliance with regulations.
- Offering recommendations to lawyers on addressing any deficiencies identified during audits.
- Drafting detailed memos to refer serious audit findings to the Professional Conduct department and providing oral evidence when required.
- Reviewing annual Trust Report submissions and assessing law firm compliance with Division 7 Rules.
- Responding to inquiries from lawyers and law firm staff regarding trust accounting and related rule interpretations.
- Participating in the review and enhancement of the Trust Assurance Program, including the ongoing development of audit procedures and reference materials.
- Assisting in the training of new auditors on audit procedures.
Qualifications:
To qualify, candidates should possess:
- A minimum of 5+ years of experience in auditing within public practice and/or accounting for law firms.
- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation with CPABC is required; candidates in the final stages of obtaining local CPA accreditation will also be considered.
- A Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist designation with ACAMS, or a willingness to obtain it.
- Strong ability to identify potential compliance concerns and possess investigative skills.
- Capability to educate lawyers on compliance-related rules and regulations.
