We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Education Assistant to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke).

Job Summary

The successful candidate will provide support to students with diverse needs, including autism, behaviour disorders, and learning disabilities. This is a permanent position for 30 hours per week at John Muir Elementary School.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support students in various classrooms, including those with autism, behaviour disorders, and learning disabilities.
  • Implement adapted or modified curriculum as needed.
  • Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems.
  • Implement augmentative alternative communication systems.
  • Assist with daily living skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
  • Support students' academic goals and participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) development.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, inclusive education specialists, and supervisors to provide a supportive learning environment.
Requirements
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Minimum three months of experience working with children.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
  • Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans an asset.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
  • Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all.
  • Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment, responding to student needs, and participating in supervision of students within the school, on the playground, and on field trips.

They will also be required to physically support students, including lifting and transferring, and may be required to support transferring students on and off buses.

The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively in a team environment, communicate clearly and respectfully, and demonstrate a commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
