ROLE SUMMARY
The Director of Pharmaceutical and Laboratory Affairs plays a pivotal leadership role within CSHP. This position is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive management of pharmacy operations, ensuring collaboration with healthcare facilities and stakeholders to integrate services effectively. The Director is dedicated to maintaining safety standards and compliance with applicable regulations while also managing laboratory services through partnerships with external vendors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and mentor the Pharmacy and Laboratory teams, addressing staffing requirements, recruitment, and retention strategies.
  • Collaborate with various healthcare institutions to standardize medication management and laboratory practices.
  • Ensure that medication safety and patient care priorities are effectively integrated into operational processes.
  • Develop strategic objectives and manage departmental budgets in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Implement policies for quality enhancement, risk management, and regulatory adherence.
  • Promote evidence-based practices and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee the security and management of controlled substances in compliance with federal regulations.
  • Maintain and update the hospital drug formulary while managing inventory efficiently.
  • Work with regional partners to establish a cohesive model for pharmacy services.
  • Advocate for safe medication practices in accordance with accreditation standards.
  • Supervise medication trials in collaboration with research initiatives.
  • Ensure seamless operations of pharmacy and laboratory services.
  • Coordinate with external vendors for after-hours and laboratory service operations.
  • Maintain an up-to-date emergency preparedness plan for pharmacy and laboratory services.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • In-depth knowledge of pharmacology, clinical therapeutics, and relevant legislation.
  • Proficiency in pharmaceutical databases and technologies to optimize pharmacy operations.
  • Understanding of pharmacy accreditation and laboratory quality standards.
  • Change management expertise to align practices with strategic objectives.
  • Strong communication skills for effective consultation and representation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive management experience in a hospital setting.
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and good standing status.
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association.
