ROLE OVERVIEW
The Director of Pharmacy and Laboratory Services plays a pivotal role in overseeing the comprehensive operations of pharmacy and laboratory services. This leadership position requires collaboration with various healthcare entities to streamline processes and enhance service delivery. The Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations while managing the laboratory services through effective partnerships with third-party vendors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the Pharmacy and Laboratory teams, focusing on recruitment, retention, and professional development.
- Work collaboratively at a system level to standardize practices across multiple healthcare facilities.
- Ensure that medication safety and patient care priorities are integrated into all operational processes.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets aligned with organizational goals and objectives.
- Implement policies aimed at quality improvement, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
- Promote evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives within the pharmacy and laboratory settings.
- Maintain strict control over medication distribution and security in accordance with federal regulations.
- Manage the hospital's drug formulary and oversee inventory management for pharmaceuticals.
- Collaborate with regional healthcare facilities to enhance pharmacy service delivery.
- Advocate for safe medication practices in line with accreditation standards.
- Oversee medication trials in partnership with research teams.
- Ensure the seamless operation of pharmacy and laboratory services.
- Coordinate with external vendors for after-hours service provision.
- Maintain an up-to-date emergency preparedness plan for pharmacy and laboratory operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- In-depth understanding of pharmacology, clinical therapeutics, and relevant legislation.
- Proficiency in pharmaceutical technologies to optimize operational efficiency.
- Familiarity with accreditation standards for pharmacy and laboratory services.
- Strong change management capabilities to align with strategic initiatives.
- Exceptional communication skills for effective consultation and representation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree; a Master's degree is preferred.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive management experience in a hospital setting.
- Active registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
- Membership in the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association.
