POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Harm Reduction Support Worker plays a crucial role in delivering a wide array of low-barrier support services to individuals engaged in harm reduction programs. This position involves providing evidence-based education and interventions aimed at enhancing knowledge about harm reduction, substance use, overdose prevention, and sexual health. The goal is to facilitate informed decision-making and promote behavior change to mitigate risks associated with substance use.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Distribute harm reduction supplies and manage recovery efforts.
2. Utilize assessment and crisis intervention skills to address immediate needs and refer clients to appropriate community resources.
3. Offer educational resources on safer substance use practices, sexual health, and the prevention of blood-borne infections.
4. Assess overdose symptoms and respond appropriately, including administering Naloxone as necessary.
5. Conduct overdose prevention training and facilitate Naloxone distribution to clients and community partners.
6. Support peer groups associated with AVI, including managing honoraria payments.
7. Maintain a safe program environment by adhering to violence prevention protocols.
8. Collaborate with partner organizations to ensure a comprehensive service continuum.
9. Keep accurate electronic records and compile necessary reports.
10. Participate in program planning and evaluation as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma in health or social services or a relevant combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of two years of experience in harm reduction settings.
- First Aid certification and experience in responding to critical incidents.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.
- Experience in community social services with knowledge of local support systems.
- Understanding of harm reduction principles and the importance of involving individuals who use drugs in service delivery.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to perform physical duties associated with the role.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
- Capacity to manage crisis situations with composure and professionalism.
- Proven advocacy and leadership skills.
- Flexibility and creativity in problem-solving.
