Fellows will become part of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Network, collaborating within a select group of leading scholars based in I-X. This unique opportunity offers tailored training and personalized career development through one-on-one mentorship.

The fellowships are structured to provide flexibility and independence, allowing researchers to explore innovative ideas while benefiting from expert guidance.

The primary objective of these fellowships is to identify outstanding researchers and support their endeavors in utilizing AI to transform and innovate within the realms of Science and Engineering. The term 'Science' encompasses a broad spectrum of topics in Natural Science and Engineering, including but not limited to Epidemiology, Biology, and foundational biomedicine, while excluding conventional clinical medical themes.

Areas of focus may include machine learning applications for single-cell data, physics-informed machine learning for turbine design, and astrostatistics. It is important to note that these positions are not intended for generic AI research; candidates should aim to make significant advancements in specific scientific domains.

Applicants should consider themselves as AI researchers addressing particular scientific challenges or as science experts utilizing AI to revolutionize their fields. While extensive AI expertise is not a prerequisite, training in AI will be provided.

We are committed to supporting women in AI within the scientific community, offering additional resources for career development and fostering a supportive network through the I-X Women in Artificial Intelligence (IXWAI). This initiative aims to enhance the representation of women in AI and create an environment where they are valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent and original research utilizing AI to advance scientific knowledge within the Maths department and I-X.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrate potential leadership qualities through initiative in research projects.
  • Exhibit an exceptional research record appropriate to their experience level, evidenced by a distinguished thesis, publications, conference presentations, or software contributions.
  • Present a research proposal aligned with the AI in Science research agenda.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for a duration of two years.

  • Research Proposal Summary: A concise summary (1 page or less) of the proposed research suitable for a general scientific audience, including the project title and the rationale for how AI will be transformative in the chosen scientific area.
  • Research Proposal: A detailed proposal (3 pages or less) explaining the transformative potential of the research within a specific scientific domain.
  • Training Plan: A brief outline (1/2 page or less) identifying skills necessary for the success of the proposed research.
  • Fit to AI in Science Remit: A short description (1/4 page or less) of how the proposal aligns with the AI in Science objectives.

Fellows will join a collaborative cohort of researchers focused on AI in Science, with opportunities for outreach and engagement with low- and middle-income countries. We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, particularly those from outside the current institution.
