Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist II to join our team at PHSA. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist II, you will be responsible for providing high-quality laboratory testing services at our 31 sites across the lower mainland and central coast of BC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and/or receive laboratory specimens and perform clinical tests ordered or prepare specimen for referral following standardized laboratory techniques.
  • Perform phlebotomies, including both venipuncture and microsampling, on adults and children.
  • Provide work direction to other staff and deal with scheduling issues as necessary.
  • Assist in the development of the staffing schedule to meet departmental staffing needs.
  • Perform a variety of bench techniques, including quality control, specimen analysis, and interpretation of test results.
  • Participate in quality control/assurance activities, including monitoring quality control results and assisting with the development of quality control ranges for new tests or controls.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Assume troubleshooting duties, including replacement of expensive parts and resolving problems beyond the scope of the Technologist I.
  • Review site-specific procedure manuals and recommend changes.
  • Assist in the implementation of new methods and equipment as directed.
  • Participate in decision-making processes, including staff meetings and problem-solving discussions.

Requirements

  • Certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSLMS).
  • Minimum of five years' recent experience in a general duty laboratory or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Interest in continuing self-education and development essential.

  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize and supervise.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including information systems.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety.
