Position Overview
Archway Community Services operates a not-for-profit educational farm dedicated to urban agriculture. The Urban Farm Operations Supervisor is a pivotal leadership role responsible for managing staff, volunteers, and the overall agricultural production to ensure a diverse and sufficient yield for market sales and community needs. This position entails working in various environments, including open fields, unheated greenhouses, and controlled Ag-Tech growing units. The role demands physical stamina, involving walking, bending, standing for extended periods, and lifting weights up to 50 lbs. Attention to detail, organization, and methodical execution of daily tasks are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
The Urban Farm Operations Supervisor will:
- Provide leadership, guidance, and oversight to all Urban Farm personnel, including Crop Assistants, Farm Assistants, Marketing Assistants, Education Assistants, and volunteers, ensuring effective task execution and skill development.
- Delegate responsibilities to maintain optimal crop production and a safe working environment.
- Manage the recruitment process for new hires, including volunteers and practicum students.
- Conduct regular team meetings to offer support and address any challenges.
- Direct crop production activities, encompassing crop management, seeding, bed preparation, composting, transplanting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and market preparation.
- Develop and oversee seeding schedules for various crops.
- Manage crop rotations throughout the growing season.
- Monitor environmental conditions in Greenhouse and Ag-Tech units.
- Coordinate community engagement activities, including educational workshops, tours, and produce sales.
- Ensure the accuracy of information regarding produce sales on the website.
- Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to create promotional materials for the Urban Farm program.
This role is ideal for individuals with experience in crop management, strong supervisory skills, and the ability to manage a program budget effectively.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Hourly Wage: $26.50
- Part-time position at 30 hours per week, with availability required from Monday to Saturday.

Qualifications:
- A diploma or degree in Horticulture, Biology, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Business, Crop Science, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- Proven experience in farm crop management.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience.
Essential Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of food crop cultivation.
- Understanding of local food security issues.
- Familiarity with food safety and workplace safety protocols.
- Budget management skills.
- Strong teamwork, coaching, and leadership abilities.
- Physical capability to perform labor-intensive tasks related to agriculture.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Availability for evening and weekend work as needed.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Food Safe and/or Market Safe certification.
- Successful completion of a fitness assessment and a Criminal Records Check as a condition of employment.
