As the After-Hours Nursing Supervisor, you will play a crucial role within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team focused on providing comprehensive services and programs to our clients. You will deliver essential clinical and operational leadership support during after-hours shifts at the Hospital. Your responsibilities will include managing resources for practice, ensuring patient safety, promoting occupational health and safety, and facilitating effective client care delivery. You will also provide clinical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to nursing team members while serving as a clinical resource and supervisor for after-hours frontline staff. Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and monitor the overall delivery of patient care and related unit activities, including the nursing model of care.
- Serve as a resource for community members and families, addressing clinical emergencies, codes, and infection control matters.
- Track and respond to critical incidents, patient and family concerns.
- Direct workflow and oversee the productivity and engagement of the nursing team, including staff development, orientation, recruitment, scheduling, and performance management.
- Consult on complex clinical decisions regarding patient care, admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Facilitate problem-solving and conflict resolution while promoting collaboration within the interdisciplinary team.
- Evaluate nursing practices and ensure staff competency in alignment with established Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards.
- Supervise the implementation of new policies, procedures, and equipment related to patient care.
- Develop and implement nursing standards, policies, and procedures in collaboration with the unit's Director.
- Coordinate clinical placements for nursing students and support their learning needs.
- Lead debriefing sessions and follow-up on critical incidents in alignment with the Director.
- Address risk management issues proactively.
- Initiate and execute quality improvement initiatives within the nursing unit.
- Ensure the availability and collection of data related to key quality indicators for analysis.
- Collaborate with the Director to prepare budget submissions and manage the approved nursing budget.
- Maintain compliance with accreditation standards.
- Provide guidance and education to support care delivery consistent with organizational principles and best practices.
- Coordinate after-hours responses to crises and emergencies, supporting initial investigations.
- Manage issues arising among clients, staff, families, and stakeholders related to client care.
- Ensure continuity in management, care, and services while maintaining communication with leadership.
- Make informed decisions regarding resource utilization throughout the hospital as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Current certification as a Registered Nurse.
- Certification in Mental Health Nursing; Canadian CPMHN (C) preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
- Health Management Diploma or relevant progressive management education.
- Experience working with patients with diverse psychiatric and addiction diagnoses.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to make independent decisions.
- Sound clinical judgment rooted in current practices and client-centered care.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Proficient in problem-solving, active listening, and negotiation.
- Strong computer skills with experience in various systems and software applications.
- Experience supervising both unionized and non-unionized staff.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety principles.
- CPR, First Aid, and suicide prevention training; HART training will be provided.
