Position Summary
The Automation Controls Engineer plays a pivotal role in designing cutting-edge control systems tailored for the sterilization sector, ensuring compliance with market demands, customer expectations, and regulatory standards. These sophisticated control systems are integral for monitoring and managing radiation, sterilization, and conveyance systems according to client specifications. The Automation Controls Engineer will also engage in on-site system commissioning, ongoing maintenance of control systems, and the development of internal software automation tools. Responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, including implementing control systems design under the mentorship of senior engineers, conducting unit tests, system testing, troubleshooting, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting site implementation. This role ensures that all systems and processes function effectively, efficiently, and safely in accordance with regulatory requirements. Staying updated with advancements in control systems, automation, design tools, and development methodologies is also essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in effective communication and collaboration with supervisors, development team members, and internal quality assurance engineers.
  • Adhere to established design and quality protocols.
  • Contribute to the formulation of test protocols, user manuals, and design documentation.
  • Initiate peer code reviews with the design team.
  • Support team objectives by complying with all STERIS policies, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Lean principles, and other directives.
  • Mentor Associate Automation Controls Engineers, developing control and safety systems along with related programs.
  • Participate in the generation of test protocols, user manuals, and design documentation.
  • Conduct unit testing of developed software to reduce defects prior to Factory Acceptance Testing.
  • Engage in the product validation process during system commissioning (Installation Qualification/Operational Qualification).
  • Assist in the creation of hardware designs (I/O Allocation, Control Hardware Bill of Materials, etc.) that align with project requirements under supervision.
  • Provide support during remote and/or on-site commissioning.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and communication to foster positive relationships with clients.
  • Assist clients with control system upgrades and during the resolution process.
  • Maintain customer relations during both remote and on-site activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with an Associate's degree or 6+ years of experience with a high school diploma/GED.
  • Proficient knowledge of hardware and software design and development processes.
  • Familiarity with unit testing, Factory Acceptance Testing, product testing, and validation processes.
  • Understanding of Control Hardware Bill of Materials.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers.
  • Ability to program in Ladder Logic and Structured Text PLC programming languages, with an understanding of PLC code configuration using external files.
  • Capability to interpret P&ID (piping and instrumentation diagrams), mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience in identifying and rectifying defects in systems and programs.
  • Willingness to assist remotely or on-site as required.
  • Ability to travel internationally on short notice.
