About the Role

The Recreation Therapist is a key member of our interdisciplinary team, responsible for assessing, developing, and implementing person-centered therapeutic recreation programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of our residents.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Therapeutic Recreation Manager to develop and maintain professional relationships that support and strengthen our organizational culture and purpose.
  • Conduct assessments of resident leisure functioning, strengths, and limitations upon admission and as required.
  • Design and implement recreation and leisure programs for individuals and groups, incorporating evidence-based practices and current trends.
  • Support the completion of monthly calendars to reflect resident needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Assist with admission and orientation of new residents and tenants, ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Document resident progress, function, and program participation, providing valuable insights for care planning.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, residents, and families to prepare for pre/post resident care conferences.
  • Conduct quarterly and annual assessments based on standards of practice and requirements of MDS-RAI and care planning timeframes.
  • Motivate and encourage resident participation through initiatives such as Resident Council, ensuring resident needs and rights are maintained and heard.
  • Assist with student and volunteer placements, orientation, and evaluation when required.
  • Participate in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational in-services.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, family, and staff, adhering to accident prevention, emergency procedures, and infection control protocols.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partnerships and agencies to enhance resident programming.
Qualifications and Skills
  • A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma.
  • Two years of related experience in Long Term Care settings, preferably with experience programming for Alzheimer's Disease and related Dementias.
  • Member or eligibility for the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).
  • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate with CPR required.
  • Serving It Right Certificate.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset.
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License as required.
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
