Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at William Osler Health System. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results, while maintaining a high level of productivity and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Monitor quality control results and respond appropriately to discordant results, ensuring that laboratory results are accurate and reliable.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform operation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory analyzers and equipment, ensuring that they are functioning properly and efficiently.
  • Specimen Management: Ensure that specimen collection, integrity, transport, and storage are appropriate for sample processing and analysis, minimizing the risk of errors and contamination.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Refers discordant findings to appropriate personnel for further follow-up, and actively participates in the laboratory quality management system and process improvements, ensuring that all team members are informed and aligned.
  • Operational Support: Assists at bone marrow collections, checks specimen for acceptability, processes in-house and send-out test requests, and monitors temperature and expiry dates of blood and blood component products to ensure products are acceptable for transfusion.
  • Inventory Management: Issues blood and blood component products, and checks operating room list to ensure blood products are available for required surgeries.
Requirements
  • Education and Certification: Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory technology program or equivalent education (CSMLS), and registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario in good standing.
  • Experience: Minimum two years recent chemistry, hematology, and transfusion medicine experience in a hospital laboratory setting, or must demonstrate successful completion of all relevant education/refresher courses within the past two years.
  • Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain a high level of productivity, competence, and professionalism, with strong multi-tasking, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and Competencies: Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm, and other Microsoft Office computer systems, with the ability to evaluate and analyze information to facilitate continuous improvement of the laboratory process in the interest of quality patient care.
