Communications Strategy Officer
Position Overview
As integral members of the military, Communications Strategy Officers deliver expert guidance on communication strategies at various levels, serving as essential consultants to military leaders during both domestic and international missions.
These officers specialize in all facets of external and internal communication, adeptly crafting, implementing, and assessing communication initiatives aimed at educating the public about the roles and operations of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of a Communications Strategy Officer include:
- Assessing and interpreting public sentiment in national and international media
- Contributing to the formulation of policies
- Collecting and disseminating information both internally and externally
- Engaging with journalists, interest groups, and the public regarding defense matters
Work Environment
Communications Strategy Officers operate in a contemporary office environment, with potential assignments at major bases and various headquarters across the country and internationally. They may also be deployed globally to support CAF operations during conflicts, peacekeeping missions, or humanitarian efforts.
Career Path
For those pursuing a career in the Regular Force, upon completing necessary training, individuals will be assigned to their initial base. While there is some flexibility regarding relocations, it is likely that personnel will experience a move during their career. Conversely, joining the Primary Reserve Force allows for service through a specific Reserve unit, with part-time commitments that do not require relocation. Typically, Reserve members work one evening per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time roles.
Qualifications
Given the communication-focused nature of this role, candidates must be proficient in one or both official languages. A university degree in Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, or Journalism is preferred, and prior experience in public affairs, public relations, or journalism is advantageous. Basic training and military officer qualification training are prerequisites for assignment.
Training Requirements
Upon enrollment, candidates will undergo basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School for a duration of 12 weeks. This training encompasses military fundamentals, leadership principles, CAF regulations, basic weapon handling, and first aid. Participants will also engage in practical exercises to apply their military skills in various scenarios. A rigorous physical fitness regimen is a critical component of this training, which is conducted in English or French, with successful completion necessary for further training.
Following basic training, candidates may receive official second language training, which can take between two to nine months, depending on their proficiency.
All specialized training for Communications Strategy Officers is centralized at the Defence Public Affairs Learning Centre. This intensive six-month program equips candidates with the essential tools and knowledge to support public affairs operations at large bases, formations, and deployed task forces. The curriculum emphasizes the development of skills necessary to advise commanders on public affairs, create communication materials, manage media relations, plan public affairs initiatives, coordinate media events, and foster community relations.
