  • Lead the establishment of a new cost-benefit analysis framework to assess the necessity for economic transmission expansion.
  • Oversee technical and reliability aspects of transmission planning for a long-term horizon of 20 years.
  • Coordinate with near-term operations teams to integrate reliability considerations into planning.
  • Develop relationships with Transmission Facility Owners (TFOs) and industry partners to ensure efficient coordination of long-term planning drivers.
  • Guide the implementation of new legal and regulatory requirements, providing interpretations and advice on changes, and represent AESO in regulatory proceedings.
  • Identify long-term system risks and formulate planning methodologies to mitigate these risks.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to incorporate system planning considerations into AESO's broader initiatives.
  • Maintain oversight and continuous support for competitive process transmission projects.
  • Serve as the standard owner for all planning-related Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO rules, leading the AESO team during audits.
  • Engage in industry working groups to advocate for AESO's perspective and ensure alignment with industry standards.
  • Maintain regular communication with Distribution Facility Owners (DFOs) to align their long-term plans with transmission system strategies.
  • Stay informed about industry development trends.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) and active membership with APEGA are required.
  • A minimum of fifteen years of engineering experience in the electric utility sector, particularly in transmission planning, power system operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • In-depth understanding of Alberta's electricity sector regulatory framework, including AESO Tariff and reliability standards.
  • Experience in leading and developing effective engineering teams.
