Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator

Position Overview:
The Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator is a skilled role focused on the safe operation of various heavy machinery essential for roadway upkeep. This position entails responsibilities related to the maintenance of highways, the operation of specialized equipment, and the execution of physically demanding tasks to ensure the Highway Maintenance Program is conducted in accordance with contractual obligations.
Important Note: This is an On-Call position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Foster effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Take responsibility for actions by acknowledging errors, sharing both positive and negative updates, and maintaining transparency.
- Communicate effectively, exchanging information and ideas while actively listening to others.
- Show dedication to the care and maintenance of company equipment.
- Adhere to relevant labor laws, specifications, and organizational policies.
Emergency Response Duties:
- Ensure the proper placement of signage and traffic control devices.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including weather events, wildlife encounters, and accidents, as outlined in Operations Excellence Training Modules (OETM) and relevant specifications.
Operational and Labor Tasks:
- Operate machinery and engage in labor-intensive tasks for snow and ice management, roadside upkeep, road surface repair, traffic control, bridge maintenance, and general highway maintenance.
- Conduct inspections, maintenance, and operation of equipment in line with company standards, promptly reporting any issues.
- Ensure the security of vehicles, equipment, facilities, and keys in accordance with company policies.
- Maintain physical stamina to perform demanding tasks, including standing, walking, climbing, and lifting materials and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. with appropriate tools.
- Work scheduled hours, including shifts and on-call responsibilities as per company guidelines.
Work Environment:
- Extended hours and continuous service may be required.
- Shift work, on-call duties, and night shifts are integral to this role.
- Visibility may be limited during snow plowing operations.
- Planning and scheduling of shifts and call-ins will be necessary.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
Qualifications & Experience:
- Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement.
- Clean and valid driver's abstract.
- Minimum of 50 hours of experience operating a snowplow.
- Proficiency in operating and performing minor maintenance on light, medium, and heavy machinery.
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (preferred).
- Must reside within a reasonable distance from the assigned work location.
