Position Overview:

The Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator is a skilled role focused on the safe operation of various heavy machinery utilized in the upkeep of highways. This position entails responsibilities related to highway maintenance, equipment management, and performing physically demanding tasks to ensure the Highway Maintenance Program is executed in accordance with contractual obligations.

Note: This is an On-Call position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster strong working relationships with colleagues.
  • Take responsibility for actions by acknowledging errors, sharing both positive and negative updates, and maintaining honesty and transparency.
  • Communicate effectively, sharing insights and listening attentively to others.
  • Show a personal commitment to the upkeep and servicing of company machinery.
  • Understand and adhere to relevant labor laws, specifications, and organizational policies.

Emergency Response Duties:

  • Ensure proper signage and traffic control measures are established.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed, including weather-related incidents, wildlife encounters, and accidents, in accordance with established training modules and specifications.

Operational and Labor Tasks:

  • Operate machinery and perform labor-intensive tasks related to snow and ice management, roadside upkeep, road surface repair, traffic control, bridge maintenance, and general highway maintenance.
  • Conduct inspections, maintenance, and operation of equipment to meet company standards, promptly reporting any issues or defects.
  • Ensure that vehicles, equipment, facilities, and keys are secured in line with company policies.
  • Exhibit the physical stamina necessary for demanding labor, including standing, walking, climbing, and the ability to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. with appropriate tools.
  • Adhere to scheduled hours, including shift work and on-call responsibilities as per company guidelines.

Work Environment:

  • Extended hours and continuous service may be required.
  • Shift work, on-call duties, and night shifts are significant components of this role.
  • Work may be conducted in conditions of poor visibility, particularly during snow plowing.
  • Plan and manage work shifts and call-ins effectively.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Possession of a valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement.
  • A clean and valid driver's abstract.
  • Proven experience in snowplow operation, with a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience.
  • Familiarity with the operation and minor maintenance of light, medium, and heavy machinery.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • A valid Standard First Aid Certificate is preferred.
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance from the assigned operational area.
