Qualifications and Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Services Nurse to join our team at Island Health. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of mental health and addiction issues, as well as experience in working with at-risk clients, including sex trade workers and street-involved populations.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of chemical dependency, including the pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal, as well as the bio-psychosocial spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.

Key responsibilities will include providing detached/outreach services, working with clients affected or at risk of HIV, TB, Hepatitis C, and other blood-borne diseases, and demonstrating a commitment to Indigenous Health approaches, protocol, and cultural issues.

We are looking for a candidate who is able to work effectively with an inter-disciplinary team, communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and exercise critical thinking skills to analyze and resolve problems.

The successful candidate will also possess a valid BC Driver's License and be able to operate related equipment, including basic computer skills.

Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of chemical dependency and the bio-psychosocial spiritual model of care
  • Ability to work with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an inter-disciplinary team
  • Valid BC Driver's License and basic computer skills
