Qualifications and Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Services Unit Nurse to join our team at Island Health. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of mental health and addiction issues, as well as experience in working with at-risk populations.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of chemical dependency, including the pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal. They will also have a working knowledge of the bio-psychosocial spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.

Key responsibilities will include providing detached/outreach services to clients, working with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families, and facilitating groups and demonstrating leadership through teaching, coaching, and mentoring.

The successful candidate will be able to work effectively in an inter-disciplinary team, communicate effectively with clients, families, and healthcare professionals, and maintain a commitment to continued professional development.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of chemical dependency and addiction treatment methodologies
  • Ability to work with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking skills to analyze and resolve problems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an inter-disciplinary team
  • Ability to tolerate stress and deal with a wide range of medical, mental health, behavioral, and emotional issues

Education and Experience:

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant
  • Recognized post-basic education related to psychiatric nursing, substance use, harm reduction, and/or mental illness
  • Two (2) years recent related experience

Language: English
