About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team by performing various functions related to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing.

Responsibilities will include specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens on an analyzer. You will also be responsible for supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service activities.

Positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling are essential to this role. You will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and may be required to interact with various stakeholders and clients.

Incumbents must adhere to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures, and strict adherence to safety and infection prevention and control procedures is required.

We are looking for a candidate who is able to work independently, use good judgment, maintain a professional appearance, and demonstrate excellent customer service.

About You

We are seeking a candidate who has a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and has successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and has current registration with CSMLS.

Candidates must also have strong written and verbal communication skills, basic understanding of medical terminology, and manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects.

Ability to accurately number/label specimens and file slides/requisitions, and ability to adapt to updates/changes in operating procedures are also essential.

Basic computer skills, Meditech experience is preferred, and access to reliable transportation as travel may be required.

Hours

This is a long assignment, part-time position with 67.5 hours biweekly. The position is available as soon as possible for approximately 18 months.

Compensation and Incentives

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive hourly rate of $23.19 - $26.27, and may be eligible for our benefits package which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
