About the Data Science Team

At Thumbtack, our Data Science team plays a crucial role in empowering our company to make data-driven decisions. We collaborate with cross-functional partners to tackle complex analytical challenges, from optimizing pricing strategies to evaluating the impact of new business models on our performance.

The Role

We're seeking a talented Data Scientist to join our team and contribute to our mission. As a Data Scientist at Thumbtack, you'll have the opportunity to leverage your critical thinking, interpersonal, and technical skills to drive business impact. You'll work closely with product teams to support new feature launches, analyze market trends, and inform strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct quantitative research to identify key user behaviors, product flows, and business trends.
  • Develop and analyze experiments to inform causal inference, in collaboration with engineers and economists.
  • Partner with product managers to scope new features, including scenario modeling and business logic recommendations.
  • Define and monitor key metrics, investigating changes and proposing next steps.
  • Develop expertise in specific areas, such as Thumbtack search and its interactions with other systems.
  • Contribute to our data culture through accessible data table design and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with, mentor, and help recruit team members.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or economics.
  • Experience managing stakeholders with competing priorities in areas such as Product Management, Design, Engineering, and Marketing.
  • Expertise in SQL and proficiency in Python or R.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build strong relationships cross-functionally and with leadership.
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in a technical area such as Statistics, Engineering, Analytics, Math, Computer Science, Operations Research, or Economics.

  • A well-balanced combination of big-picture thinking, ability to thrive in ambiguity, exceptional problem-solving skills, and patience to teach others and uphold a high bar.
  • Experience working on a 2-sided marketplace.
  • Data visualization and segmentation skills in tools like Tableau or Looker.
  • Comfortable with code repository and version control tools like Git.
