Recreation Therapy Associate

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Recreation Therapy Associate to join our Adolescent Intensive Services (AIS) team at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. The AIS is a voluntary treatment program that provides 24/7 treatment services to adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 years old who are struggling with substance use, mental health disorders, or concurrent disorders.
As a Recreation Therapy Associate, you will work collaboratively with our interdisciplinary team to provide mental health and addiction services to adolescents and their families. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Providing therapeutic-based interventions and programming to enhance the development of life-long leisure skills and attitudes
- Planning and developing program content to meet the needs of our clients
- Ensuring group safety during on-site and community programming
- Volunteer management and management of equipment resources
You will work closely with our Recreation Therapist to implement appropriate interventions and plans, including documentation and reporting of observations. This is a temporary, hourly position with a 60% FTE for 6 months, with the possibility of extension.
Requirements
- Completion of a two-year Diploma in Human Services Therapeutic Recreation or equivalent program
- Minimum two years of experience as a Recreation Therapy Associate
- Recent experience working with adolescents and families
- Successful completion of a CPR Level C Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) course within the last 12 months
- NCI certification
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in leisure/recreation program planning
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and addictions disorders and the impact on health, well-being, and quality of life
- Working knowledge of harm reduction approaches and substance misuse and/or concurrent disorders best practices
- Working knowledge of Trauma Informed Care and the Connect Model
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated initiative, ability to set priorities and manage workload effectively
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional care team
- Demonstrated excellent time management, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to family-centred care
- Demonstrated ability to establish and promote interpersonal and community relationships
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Demonstrated knowledge and competency in meeting IWK clinical documentation standards
- Valid minimal Class 5 Nova Scotia driver's license and ability to drive program van
- Demonstrated experience implementing behaviour management strategies
- Competencies in other languages considered an asset
