Role Overview
We are seeking a Manager, Tax to join our Finance department, reporting directly to the Director of Tax. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing tax planning and compliance across Canadian, U.S., and international jurisdictions, with a focus on minimizing tax liabilities and associated costs. You will also manage a team of tax professionals and liaise with external advisors and tax authorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Ownership: You will take charge of international tax compliance for the organization and its subsidiaries, which includes planning, reporting, and compliance. Your goal will be to develop tax strategies that effectively reduce the overall tax burden for the consolidated group.
- Tax Accounting Management: You will oversee the preparation of the quarterly global tax provision, ensuring accurate financial reporting. Additionally, you will assist in preparing financial disclosures for public filings and manage the timely submission of Canadian and foreign tax compliance requirements.
- Compliance Assurance: You will ensure adherence to tax regulations, managing withholding taxes on revenue from various sources, including equipment leasing and film licensing.
- Process Optimization: You will identify opportunities to enhance existing processes, implementing best practices for tracking and analyzing global tax expenses. This includes maintaining internal controls documentation.
- Collaborative Engagement: You will work closely with finance directors to accurately calculate tax provisions and address tax-related balance sheet items. Your role will involve direct interaction with customers and government auditors to resolve tax-related inquiries.
- Knowledge Development: You will stay updated on legislative changes and technical guidance affecting tax reporting, while also mentoring junior tax staff to foster their professional growth.
Qualifications
- Educational Background: A university degree is required, along with a CA or CPA designation and completion of the CICA In-depth Tax Course.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 years in a financial accounting role, with experience in a tax department of a public accounting firm or within the industry. You should possess a strong understanding of tax planning, compliance, and return preparation.
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in developing tax strategies and a high level of proficiency in Excel and data modeling software. Familiarity with SAP Financial and Accounting modules is advantageous.
- Analytical Skills: A proactive and resourceful mindset, with a systematic approach to problem-solving, weighing costs, benefits, and risks before making decisions.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build strong relationships and effectively communicate complex tax guidelines to diverse teams, demonstrating cultural awareness in a global business environment.
