Job Summary

We are seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Manager to join our team in Toronto, Canada. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of our EHS management systems, maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and driving a culture of safety and sustainability within our organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate on our leadership team and report to the Plant Operations Manager
  • Organize and control the EHS functions of the Toronto, Canada site to ensure an effective accident prevention and regulatory compliance program is maintained
  • Responsible for overall implementation of EHS with respect to federal, state, and local requirements, including company-specific policies and programs
  • Integration of Company and facility-level EHS management systems to maintain compliance, environmental protection, and safe operating conditions
  • Track and regularly report the status of regulatory compliance and improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accident injury log and all other governmental and corporate database records
  • Investigate all releases, injuries, and near-misses to identify root cause and implement corrective actions
  • Act as the main point of contact regarding safety management to ensure overall compliance and coordination of resources related to safety
  • Coordinate the Job Safety Analysis program and PPE compliance program and maintain the SDS system
  • Drive continuous improvement and deliver strong results from behavioral-based processes
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits and regulations, including air program, hazardous waste, general stormwater programs, and annual reporting
  • Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices and develop hazard control practices and programs
  • Review plant incident statistics and make recommendations for correction of problem areas
  • Conduct periodic risk assessments of plant machinery, equipment, and working conditions to ensure conformance to appropriate safety and sanitary standards and regulations
  • Provide advice, assist, and audit the front-line leadership to ensure that effective EHS is implemented and working
  • Maintain working relationships with Regulatory Agencies and chair or co-chair and lead the Safety Committee
  • Maintain the facility's compliance records for permits
  • Review Federal, State, and local regulation changes that impact permits and permit compliance
  • Interface with regulatory agencies, as needed
  • Support and assist in the tracking of site/corporate sustainability objectives
  • Help champion health and wellness initiatives
  • Assist with maintaining the Site Preparedness and Emergency Plans & Procedures
  • Actively participate in the Corporate EHS Network
  • Spend significant time engaging with operations personnel to drive a strong, health safety culture
  • Serve as a member of the site leadership team and network with peers to drive success and assist the site in attaining its goals

Requirements

  • Advanced professional EHS certification (CSP, CIH, CHMM, QEP, CEA, REM, etc.) preferred and experience with behavior-based safety initiative desired
  • 5 years of EHS leadership experience with progressive work assignments (manufacturing setting preferred) Safety Management experience is desired
  • Air permitting and reporting experience is a plus
  • Experience of setting KPI's for the monitoring of performance for Health & Safety
  • Strong leadership, managerial, training, and mentoring skills
  • Detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements and EHS policies, procedures, and programs
  • Experience in NFPA 101 life safety codes, NFPA 70E, Safety & EPA Regulations
  • Strong Project/Problem resolution skills
  • Understanding of applicable computer systems including Google-based tools
  • Good written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills. Strong mentoring, facilitating, and training skills with the flexibility to support a 24-hour 7-day manufacturing schedule
