Job Overview: The Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the pre-analytical and post-analytical processes, ensuring that analyzers and samples are accurately prepared for testing, as well as managing the storage and disposal of samples. This position provides essential support across various departments by delivering and preparing specimens for the testing area, preparing necessary reagents, troubleshooting issues, and performing maintenance on equipment.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all specimens are prepared for testing in accordance with established protocols, including visual quality assurance of specimens.
  • Prepare reagents following standard operating procedures for testing systems that do not require verification by a certified Medical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Load analyzers and instruments with patient, validation, and/or quality control samples according to departmental guidelines and under the supervision of a certified/registered Medical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Manage the handling of specimens, including appropriate disposal and storage.
  • Monitor, replenish, and order supplies necessary for testing areas.
  • Operate and maintain pre-analytical and post-analytical equipment as per standard operating procedures.
  • Perform cleaning duties to maintain laboratory glassware for daily operations, including acid-washing as needed.
  • Conduct equipment maintenance as per standard operating procedures, ensuring quality control is performed and approved by a certified/registered Medical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Engage in activities to maintain effective departmental operations, including reviewing and updating protocols, participating in regulatory audits, and supporting safety initiatives.
  • Resolve pending and overdue tasks in collaboration with certified/registered Medical Laboratory Technologists.
  • Collect routine deionized water samples and coordinate testing.
  • Enter data for departmental statistics and analyzer validations under the supervision of a certified/registered Medical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to clients, including physicians, patients, employees, and the organization.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety and security policies and regulations, including knowledge of safety equipment and disposal procedures for biological or chemical materials.
  • Stay informed about safety, WHMIS, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
  • Participate in and support process improvement initiatives within the departments.
  • Assist in the training and orientation of team members.

Qualifications:

  • Required Canadian Equivalent degree in Medical Laboratory Science, BMLSc, BSc in Chemistry/Biochemistry, or BSc in Microbiology. Preference will be given to applicants with prior laboratory experience.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel; experience with EP Evaluator is an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

This position requires in-person attendance.
