Position Overview:
The City of Toronto is seeking a dedicated individual to join our finance team as an Accounting Assistant 2. This role involves a variety of accounting responsibilities that are crucial for maintaining the financial integrity of our municipal operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts accounting tasks including the review, analysis, and reconciliation of ledger accounts, while establishing and managing financial records related to expenditures and revenues.
- Generates financial statements and statistical reports pertaining to departmental projects.
- Examines and reconciles budget variances and encumbrances associated with departmental initiatives.
- Monitors and reconciles capital and current project accounts, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting.
- Maintains a comprehensive Cost Control System, including detailed subsidiary records for departmental projects.
- Prepares monthly financial statements and other relevant financial data for various stakeholders.
- Calculates and submits subsidy claims, along with ad hoc financial reports to government entities.
- Handles accounts receivable functions, including bank deposits, journal entries, and reconciliations.
- Processes period-end accruals for expenditures and prepares necessary working papers for closing entries.
- Reviews financial system reports and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Analyzes accounts, including commitments and budget variances, while preparing and posting journal entries.
- Examines General Ledger accounts for accuracy and processes necessary adjustments.
- Prepares management reports and financial statements for internal use.
- Analyzes purchasing card transactions, ensuring proper documentation and account allocation.
- Provides support and guidance on financial matters to various divisions.
- Delivers financial analysis and assistance to the purchasing department.
- Creates and executes financial reports for analytical review.
- Collaborates with accounts payable and other divisions regarding purchasing card management.
- Assists with special projects and assignments as required.
- Monitors relevant regulations and by-laws for compliance and updates.
- Coordinates data collection with auditors at various levels of government.
Qualifications:
Your application should demonstrate how your qualifications align with the following:
- Current enrollment in a professional accounting program (e.g., completion of CPA preparatory courses) or a combination of education and extensive experience in accounting.
- Significant experience in municipal accounting or relevant financial reporting in the private sector.
- Strong background in analyzing and processing accounts receivable and payable transactions.
- Proficient in financial data analysis and report preparation.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with SAP financial systems or equivalent financial information systems.
Additional Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of current accounting practices and procedures.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive correspondence and documentation.
- Capability to provide direction and training to junior accounting staff.
- Strong understanding of financial controls and municipal regulations.
