Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist I, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Specialist provides high-quality cardio-pulmonary care to patients in the NICU, working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and intensive cardio-respiratory care to patients in accordance with established policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Support the NICU team with respiratory therapy expertise, including case review, physical assessment, and documentation of patient response and outcomes.
  • Operate respiratory equipment for patient care, including initial setup, ongoing quality control procedures, and initiating appropriate adjustments required by care.
  • Recommend and administer individualized medical gas therapies for patients.
  • Provide invasive and non-invasive cardio-pulmonary monitoring.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care examination.
  • Current and continuing registration with British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT) and the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT).
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, comfortable with direct interactions with patients and their families, interdisciplinary team members, and respiratory therapy colleagues.
  • Approaches daily work in an organized and efficient manner, with the ability to set appropriate priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Maintains flexibility in schedule to collaborate effectively as a team member, and to continually focus on tasks at hand despite interruptions and workload fluctuations.
  • Uses critical thinking skills to meet daily challenges both proactively when possible, and reactively to address rapidly changing situations in patient care.
  • Physically carries out the duties of the position and operates all pertinent respiratory-related equipment.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
