Job Overview

The Estimator plays a crucial role in supporting all bids and estimates within the Pacific region. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this position is responsible for developing pricing proposals through various estimating tasks, including the management and organization of bid documents, preparing take-offs for construction initiatives, and conducting research to inform bid submissions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review tender documents and participate in pre-bid meetings to clarify the scope of work and the necessary components of estimates.
  • Analyze tender documents, plans, specifications, and other relevant materials to prepare estimates for time, costs, materials, and labor.
  • Conduct quantity surveys and take-offs as needed.
  • Compile detailed material lists based on tender documents and specifications, forwarding them to the Material Manager for pricing.
  • Incorporate historical data from previous estimates, purchase agreements, and subcontracts to enhance current bid accuracy.
  • Evaluate bids from subcontractors for completeness and accuracy regarding the scope of work.
  • Develop scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Prepare submissions and coordinate activities for bid day with other estimating team members.
  • Ensure compliance with all tender document requirements.
  • Verify that all general conditions of the tender documents are satisfied, including insurance, bonding, and special requirements.
  • Collaborate with management to strategize estimating approaches and gather feedback on estimates.
  • Create initial construction schedules and cash flow forecasts.
  • Monitor and update upcoming projects within SharePoint on a weekly basis.
  • Prepare and present project turnover packages upon contract award.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma plus post-secondary education in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience, preferably in the construction or railway sectors.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Proficient in reviewing contract documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capable of effectively managing multiple tasks and priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in utilizing common business and estimating software, including Microsoft Office, Hard Dollar, Explorer, or JD Edwards.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • This is a full-time office position.
  • Occasional weekend or night work may be necessary.
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor construction sites in various weather conditions may be required.
  • Most fieldwork will occur on and around live tracks.
  • Work may take place in urban, rural, or isolated areas, with accommodations and transportation provided if necessary.
