Overview
The District of Houston is in search of a dedicated Chief of Recreational Services. Houston is beautifully situated in the Bulkley Valley, surrounded by some of British Columbia's premier outdoor recreational activities. Strategically located between Prince George and Terrace, the District offers year-round enjoyment of various activities such as cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing, biking, and snowmobiling. With a population of 3,200, Houston is celebrated for its small-town charm and welcoming atmosphere. The community boasts excellent indoor recreational facilities and easy access to nature, contributing to a high quality of life.

Role of the Chief of Recreational Services
As the head of the Recreational Services Team and reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Chief of Recreational Services will oversee the comprehensive management of recreation services and facilities within the District. Responsibilities include program development and execution, ensuring the safe and effective operation of recreational facilities, and collaborating with community partners to enhance and expand recreational offerings. Furthermore, the Chief will ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and will advise the CAO and Council on policies and procedures to meet organizational goals.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in delivering recreational programs and services, with a proven ability to maintain strong relationships with both customers and employees. A track record of evaluating programs and services to identify opportunities for improvement is essential. Previous experience managing a recreation facility or department is highly desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate a solid understanding of relevant legislation, including the Community Charter, as well as regulations established by Technical Safety BC and the Ministry of Health regarding recreational services.

Qualifications

  1. A post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in recreation management, public administration, business management, or a related field.
  2. Prior experience in a supervisory or management role, with preference for candidates who have public sector or non-profit experience, or three or more years in a similar capacity.
  3. A combination of relevant experiences that equate to the qualifications listed above.
