Position Overview:

The Substance Use and Addictions Support Specialist (SUASS) operates within a client-centered framework, utilizing a harm-reduction approach that acknowledges the historical impacts of trauma on individuals and families.

The SUASS will deliver essential services to clients grappling with substance use issues through counseling, outreach, and community engagement activities. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, facilitating referrals, and developing programs that address the needs of individuals and families affected by substance use.

This role involves the creation and management of educational initiatives focused on substance use awareness, as well as the coordination of workshops and community presentations. The SUASS will also engage in home visits and liaise with medical facilities to provide holistic support to clients.

The SUASS plays a vital role in implementing preventive health strategies aimed at addressing substance use and dependency. The specialist will assess client needs, provide guidance, and connect them with appropriate treatment resources, ensuring a compassionate and informed approach.

In addition, the SUASS will work collaboratively with clients and their families to enhance understanding and coping strategies related to substance use challenges. The role requires a high level of professionalism and sensitivity, particularly when navigating emotionally charged situations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement programs that emphasize resilience and self-esteem.
  • Develop and oversee a counseling program focused on substance use.
  • Facilitate engagement initiatives for youth, adults, and elders facing substance use challenges.
  • Maintain accurate records and statistical data on program effectiveness.
  • Prepare reports detailing program outcomes and community trends.
  • Organize educational workshops on substance use prevention and awareness.
  • Support community members dealing with substance use and dependency issues.
  • Conduct assessments and facilitate referrals to treatment facilities.
  • Ensure confidentiality and accuracy in client documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and families regarding treatment options.
  • Participate in community events to promote awareness and support.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners.
  • Provide guidance to volunteers and team members.
  • Stay informed about community well-being and potential risks.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substance use issues and treatment methodologies.
  • Familiarity with traditional healing practices and community resources.
  • Understanding of the social and cultural context of substance use within the community.
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Proficient in the use of technology for program management and reporting.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for work-related purposes.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Work Environment:

  • Work is conducted in both office and community settings.
