Job Overview

The Custodian/Cleaner plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities managed by Neeginan Centre Inc. This position involves performing various cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute cleaning and janitorial duties as per the established schedules and standards.
  • Carry out tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming in offices, restrooms, and communal areas.
  • Dispose of waste and manage garbage collection efficiently.
  • Keep the janitorial storage area organized and well-stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of windows and glass surfaces.
  • Clean elevators and door tracks to ensure functionality and appearance.
  • Replace light bulbs safely when required.
  • Perform floor maintenance including stripping, cleaning, buffing, and waxing.
  • Sanitize walls, restroom stalls, and other heavily used surfaces.
  • Conduct outdoor cleaning tasks, including snow removal as needed.
  • Utilize and care for cleaning equipment and supplies properly.
  • Ensure building security by locking doors and activating alarms as necessary.
  • Assist in preparing the facility for meetings and special events.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by the lead cleaner.

Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Experience: At least one year in a similar cleaning role, with a solid understanding of commercial cleaning practices.
  • Background Checks: A clear criminal record and child abuse registry check are mandatory.

Specialized Skills

  • Proficient in the safe operation of cleaning machinery such as floor polishers and carpet cleaners.
  • WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain training.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to pursue training.
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use.

Personal Attributes

  • Dependable, trustworthy, and punctual.
  • Strong teamwork abilities.
  • Capable of adhering to safety protocols and cleaning standards.
  • Familiarity with cleaning agents and their safe usage and storage.

Physical Demands

The role requires:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (22kg) with moderate physical exertion.

  • Capability to stand, crouch, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Regular use of stairs in a multi-storey environment.
  • Attention to detail in all cleaning tasks.
