Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Library Technician Level II/III, the Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the library's operations across the campus. This position collaborates with fellow library personnel to enhance the library services offered to students, faculty, and staff at North Island College.

Assigned shifts will be communicated via phone, and completion of timesheets for payroll is required. Please note that this temporary role does not guarantee a set number of working hours.


It is important to understand that the duration of this temporary position may vary, potentially concluding earlier or extending based on the operational needs of the College.

As outlined in the NIC CUPE Local 3479 collective agreement, temporary employees with assignments under twelve (12) months are not entitled to seniority or layoff provisions.

This appointment is on an on-call basis, and there is no assurance of ongoing employment with the College, nor is there an obligation for the College to provide work opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage circulation duties, including the check-in and check-out of library materials and the collection of fines.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests for various media formats, adhering to established protocols.
  • Offer reference and research support to library users.
  • Conduct group and individual library instruction, assisting users with catalog, database, and internet navigation.
  • Maintain the library's physical collection and environment, including tasks such as book repairs and shelf organization.
  • Prepare new library materials by applying labels, security features, and protective covers.
  • Resolve technical issues related to library equipment, including computers and printers.
  • Assist in training and supervising student assistants as necessary.
  • Perform additional library-related tasks, such as sorting mail, shelving materials, compiling statistics, and creating displays.
Qualifications

- Completion of Grade 12 and two years of relevant post-secondary education.

- A minimum of two years of experience in an automated library setting.

  • Proficient in utilizing journal databases and electronic resources.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to work independently, employing initiative and analytical skills to address challenges.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with a focus on prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to engage in effective teamwork, showcasing active listening and collaborative goal-setting.
