Position Overview:

The Chief of Community Engagement will leverage extensive organizing and advocacy leadership experience, a deep understanding of systemic violence and justice issues, and a comprehensive analysis of racial inequities to spearhead our movement initiatives.

This pivotal role focuses on guiding the Freedom Community Center's efforts in grassroots movement development through leadership cultivation, organizing, and coalition-building. The Chief will collaborate with the Executive Director to formulate a long-term strategy aimed at empowering a survivor-centered Black liberation movement centered on transformative justice principles. This leader will oversee the Movement Building initiatives of FCC, which include canvassing efforts, monthly Powerbuilding gatherings, and leadership development programs. Additionally, the Chief will work to align FCC's survivor movement with coalitions across the region to advance key advocacy goals outlined in the power-building strategy. The ideal candidate will possess a proven history of success in community mobilization and demonstrate a well-rounded transformational and intersectional perspective, rooted in critical race theory and/or liberative philosophies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mobilize targeted neighborhoods through canvassing, outreach, and community events to grow FCC's membership.
  • Design and execute a membership decision-making framework through the PowerBuilders monthly meetings.
  • Engage members in reimagining and transforming the Defund. Reenvision. Transform. campaign, including political education, strategy formulation for rethinking public safety, and developing policy priorities that promote alternatives to policing and incarceration.
  • Supervise a team of 2-3 community organizers.
  • Facilitate training for members to become healers/restorative justice practitioners within FCC's Peacemaking initiatives.
  • Encourage participants in FCC Peacemaking to join the PowerBuilders Membership.
  • Lead ongoing and emerging community-driven, direct-action campaigns aimed at addressing public safety, policing, and incarceration issues.

Current Focus Areas (examples, not exhaustive):

  • Creating canvassing strategies for organizing neighborhoods.
  • Training and mentoring staff in their one-on-one organizing efforts.
  • Facilitating discussions to foster a shared understanding of potential alternatives to policing.
  • Leading direct action initiatives.

Candidate Profile & Success Factors:

Successful candidates will bring a diverse range of experiences and skills, including:

  • A strong commitment to our mission and social justice.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in community organizing, leadership development, and policy advocacy.
  • Expertise in criminal justice, violence prevention, restorative justice, trauma-informed care, and victim services.
  • Proven ability to manage a team of community organizers.
  • Capacity to engage and connect with members of marginalized communities, particularly those impacted by violence and the legal system.
  • Experience in developing and implementing membership recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Ability to lead and strategize direct action initiatives with diverse experience levels.
  • Abolitionist and transformative justice mindset.
  • Strong people management and coaching abilities, particularly with directly impacted individuals.
  • Credibility and capacity to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Encouragement of applications from survivors of violence, formerly incarcerated individuals, and their families.

Core Competencies:

  • Understanding of Black liberation and abolitionist frameworks.
  • Community engagement and prioritization of lived experiences in decision-making.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and foster consensus among diverse groups.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented, and innovative environment.
  • Highly organized with strong ethical standards.
  • Self-motivated, independent thinker, and collaborative team player.

This is a full-time exempt position. The Freedom Community Center offers competitive health benefits, dental and vision plans, flexible PTO, and life insurance.

The Freedom Community Center is proud to be an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and actively seeks the candidacy of people of color, women, LGBTQIA individuals, and formerly incarcerated persons. We are committed to inclusive hiring and dedicated to diversity in our work and staff.
