Track Maintenance Specialist

Railway Track Repair Operator
The Railway Track Repair Operator plays a crucial role in the upkeep of rail infrastructure by conducting inspections, repairs, and replacements of rails, ties, switches, and ballasts. This position involves outdoor work in diverse weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a secure work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the maintenance of CN's railway tracks, including rails, ties, switches, and ballasts through thorough inspection, repair, and replacement
- Utilize and maintain various hand tools necessary for assigned tasks
- Execute the removal and replacement of defective ties, rail spikes, and anchors
- Address and repair any deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge
- Install and repair street and railroad crossings, and assist in the maintenance or replacement of components such as power-operated switches and insulated joints
- Unload ballasts and effectively distribute track materials
- Sort and prepare used track materials for loading
- Ensure the railroad right-of-way is free from brush, vegetation, snow, and debris
- Adhere to CN's safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment
Working Conditions:
- Work may involve shifts, with occasional overtime as required
- Travel may be necessary, including overnight stays
- Work is primarily conducted outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
- Involves repetitive physical tasks
- Physical requirements include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 70 pounds occasionally
Qualifications:
- Relevant experience in similar working conditions or within a regulatory and safety-focused environment
- Experience in operating heavy machinery and equipment
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required
- A valid driver's license is necessary
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old
- Must fulfill all medical fitness for duty requirements, including safety-related criteria
- Ability to work independently, adapt to various situations, and manage stress effectively
- Exhibit strong teamwork skills and maintain positive interactions with colleagues
- Committed to achieving tasks while upholding standards of quality, safety, productivity, and client satisfaction
- Demonstrate sound judgment and common sense
- Possess good hand-eye coordination and grasping skills
- Welding skills and knowledge of signals or Railroad Operating Rules are considered assets
Training:
The selected candidate will undergo a comprehensive training program lasting 3 weeks, with 40 hours of instruction per week. This training focuses on health and safety regulations as well as fundamental machine operation procedures. Successful completion of this training is mandatory to qualify for the role of Railway Track Repair Operator.
This position is part of a union, and as such, compensation and benefits are determined by the applicable collective agreement.
