Position Overview:
The School of Continuing Studies operates as a revenue-generating entity, providing a diverse array of specialized non-degree courses and programs tailored to meet the unique needs of various student demographics. In this context, effective financial planning, forecasting, and accounting practices are crucial, and having a skilled and well-organized support team is essential for the School's overall success. The Financial Analyst will collaborate closely with the Financial Officer to help achieve the strategic goals and objectives of the School while promoting financial stability in alignment with the School's strategic vision.
Key Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Assisting the Financial Officer with reconciliations and the production of internal and external financial reports.
- Analyzing financial trends and variances to support informed decision-making.
- Providing recommendations for process enhancements to improve financial operations.
- Contributing to month-end and year-end financial tasks.
- Streamlining workflows and financial processes to enhance efficiency.
- Supporting departmental operations to ensure all financial needs are met.
- Providing backup support to the Financial Assistant during their absence.
Qualifications:
A university degree in accounting or business, or an equivalent of four years of recent experience (within the last five years) in similar roles. Progress towards a recognized accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA) is considered an asset.
Experience Requirements:
A minimum of two years of experience in accounting or as a financial analyst, ideally within a revenue-focused or profit-driven environment. Familiarity with computerized financial reporting software (e.g., PeopleSoft or other ERP systems), account monitoring and reconciliation, financial report preparation, and variance analysis is essential. Experience in financial modeling and process improvement is advantageous.
Skills and Competencies:
Proficiency in advanced spreadsheet applications (Excel), with intermediate skills in Word and PowerPoint. Exposure to software such as PeopleSoft Financials, Destiny, Moneris, and reporting tools (e.g., Crystal Reports, eReports, nVisions) is beneficial. The ability to prioritize tasks and manage a high volume of work effectively is crucial. Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, along with meticulous attention to detail, are required. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities are essential.
Additional Information:
Candidates must be prepared to provide verification of their degrees, credentials, or equivalencies from accredited institutions during the interview process. Standard working hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential overtime requests during peak periods, which typically occur in September, January, and April. Vacation restrictions may apply during specific times of the year.
