About the Safe at Home Society

The Safe at Home Society is a collaborative organization committed to eradicating and preventing homelessness in the Yukon. We unite various stakeholders, including service agencies, government partners, landlords, and individuals with lived experiences of homelessness to create connections between people and the housing support they require. Through initiatives such as the transformation of a former hotel into supportive housing and the operation of the By-Name Data, the society actively engages in advocacy and practical solutions for homelessness across the territory.

Job Overview

This role offers person-centered assistance to former residents of the Temporary Winter Housing Initiative, as well as individuals identified by the frontline team as needing specific outreach-based support. Responsibilities include direct field outreach, relationship development, assessing individual needs, researching resources, programs, or services, and facilitating referrals related to housing, income, and health services. The role, job functions, and activities are expected to evolve. This position will report to the Outreach Supervisor and collaborate closely with frontline staff and other outreach workers.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Deliver direct outreach services within the community to establish and maintain positive relationships with individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
  • Develop and nurture supportive relationships with clients while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Conduct intakes and common assessments for the By-Name List as necessary, providing support services and coordinating appropriate warm referrals to help individuals feel connected.
  • Offer culturally appropriate, safe, trauma-informed, and competent outreach services in various environments based on individual needs.
  • Provide crisis intervention and utilize Housing First, harm-reduction, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches in service delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with involved service providers such as social workers, case managers, or clinicians, while adhering to relevant privacy legislation and the individuals' care goals.
  • Handle potentially volatile and unpredictable environments with confidence and respect, prioritizing worker safety.
  • Work in tandem with Safe at Home's Eviction Prevention and Housing Stability Workers and other service providers to identify ongoing gaps and pressure points in the housing support system.
  • Collect data, communicate clearly, and report on program outcomes and challenges to inform progress and overall design and direction of housing supports.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities and conferences as identified by management;
  • Participate in succession planning and adhere to organizational IT and privacy standards and procedures (i.e., storage, records retention, passwords, etc.);
  • Mandatory attendance and participation in team meetings and supervisions; and
  • Other responsibilities as they arise and/or are directed by the Executive Director or Program Supervisor of Safe at Home Society.

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as social services or a related discipline; or
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional or volunteer experience in a related field, preferably within a non-profit organization, social services agency, or educational institution.
  • Lived experience with the target population and/or community is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and anti-oppressive practices.

Qualifications

  • Submission of a Vulnerable Sector police check.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation may be required for certain positions.
  • Knowledge of decolonizing and Housing First approaches to client support.
  • Awareness of the complexities of homelessness, poverty, and the colonial context of homelessness in Yukon, and related issues.
  • Strong understanding of community agencies, resources, and the intersection of service providers in Yukon;
  • Knowledge of SAHS vision, Built for Zero Canada, the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness' allied networks, Reaching Home: Canada's Homelessness Strategy, and related plans/initiatives.
  • Standard First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Suite and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the housing continuum in Whitehorse and the Yukon and related legislation is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with individuals facing multiple barriers to stable housing.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in establishing supportive, trusting relationships with tenants, landlords, and various service providers.
  • Excellent conflict management, crisis prevention, and mediation skills.

Work Environment

This position operates on a flexible-blocking schedule. Hours will be scheduled based on operational needs and may include daytime, evening, weekday, and weekend shifts. The role requires a combination of outreach engagements outside the office and in-office work.

Additional Application Instructions

Safe at Home is committed to employment equity and strongly encourages all qualified applicants to apply.
