The Director of Environmental Planning and Permitting will be based in one of our offices across Canada and will report to the VP of Environmental Sciences and Planning. This role adds value by:

  • Leading initiatives within our Planning and Permitting service to meet Montrose's growth, profitability, and operational goals.
  • Enhancing operational decision-making to boost project delivery efficiency.
  • Identifying and advocating for strategic, technical, and resource needs that will significantly impact Montrose's success.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Development

  • As a member of the Environmental Services and Planning leadership team, contribute to the formulation of the Planning and Permitting strategy that aligns with Montrose's overarching goals.
  • Expand our Planning and Permitting practice to establish a national footprint and increase our participation in regulatory and policy decision-making across Canada.
  • Develop and implement plans to enhance and grow our Planning and Permitting services, including outreach to target clients, innovative methodologies, and improvements in service quality.

Operational Management

  • Establish and uphold a robust safety culture for all employees within the service that reflects our core values.
  • Maintain accountability for profit and loss performance within the Planning and Permitting service.
  • Make project-related decisions for planning and permitting initiatives, including opportunity assessment, pricing, investment, project role assignments, and commercial choices.
  • Make effective performance management decisions for all principal and senior team members within the Planning and Permitting service.

Business Growth

  • Collaborate closely with business development leaders across Montrose to sustain a strong business development pipeline for planning and permitting projects that aligns with our growth and profitability targets.
  • Build and nurture client relationships essential to the success of the service.
  • Monitor client satisfaction with key clients across the service and take proactive measures to ensure an exceptional customer experience.
  • Prioritize client and project pursuits and allocate necessary resources within the service to align with the overall service line strategy.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Resource Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in environmental consulting, specifically in regulatory planning and permitting projects in Canada, with at least 10 years in a managerial capacity overseeing professional staff and leading projects.
  • Direct experience in environmental and regulatory matters across various sectors, including power, mining, infrastructure, oil and gas, and midstream.
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal permitting requirements.
  • A collaborative mindset, capable of working across regions and disciplines to achieve alignment within the Environmental Sciences and Planning service line.
  • Experience in client management and expectation handling.
  • Strong business acumen, market presence, and strategic vision.
  • Established client relationships in one or more focus market sectors (oil and gas, midstream, power, mining, infrastructure).
  • A valid class 5 driver's license with no restrictions.
