Job Summary

This position will assist in the development and delivery of education, promotion, and outreach initiatives and programs for the Environmental Services Department, including waterworks, waste and environmental management, and infrastructure programs and projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Community Engagement: Create and deliver presentations covering topics related to Markham's water/wastewater/stormwater systems, water conservation, and waste diversion initiatives. Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, including community events/workshops, schools, community groups, and professional organizations.
  • Content Research and Development: Develop and execute effective education and promotion of Environmental Services' initiatives, projects, programs, and services. Collaborate with internal departments as required.
  • Campaign Promotion: Develop promotional tactics, including video storyboards, social media messaging, and other tactics, such as city page ads and mobile signs for educational campaigns, events, and public alerts as required. Compliant with the Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Portal Authoring: Maintain Environmental Services website content, including Waste Management software tools. Coordinate with internal department sections for accurate content development and delivery.
  • Educational Materials: Create educational materials (brochures, newsletters, articles) for Environmental Services, compliant with the Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Assist with the design and purchase of approved, branded merchandise as part of the public outreach and education programs.
  • Maintain Data and Record Keeping: Collect and record public outreach metrics to aid with program improvements and future development initiatives. Including collecting and analyzing water consumption data to understand consumer consumption, track, and report environmental targets.
  • Auditing (Water and Waste): Facilitate city facility audits to analyze water use and/or zero waste compliance and provide recommendations for efficiency improvements.
  • Document Development: Research and develop documentation for awards, grants, funding, including completion of claim forms and associated documentation.
Requirements
  • A minimum of a college diploma in Environmental Studies or a related discipline, a university degree would be an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of solid experience in water resources conservation, municipal waste management, sustainability principles/practices, and/or public education/outreach.
  • Social media-related experience required.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of the Operation and Maintenance of a Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater systems is an asset.
Certifications
  • Water Quality Analyst certifications.
  • Water Auditing Certificate in order to conduct water audits.
