About the Role:

First Student Canada-Transco is seeking a highly skilled Labour Counsel to join our team. As a Labour Counsel, you will play a key role in providing expert advice on labour relations and employment law to our operations and human resources teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as chief negotiator in collective bargaining with various unions representing different sectors within Autobus Transco/FirstCanada ULC.
  • Represent the company in arbitration and mediation sessions.
  • Represent the company before provincial labour boards and human rights tribunals.
  • Represent the company in court proceedings.
  • Provide daily guidance to operations and human resources teams on all matters related to labour relations, including contract interpretation, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage employment-related complaints and disputes, and develop strategies for defence or resolution.
  • Support the manager or director and regional human resources manager (RHRM) in analyzing, developing strategies, and communicating new labour laws adopted at the federal, provincial, or municipal level that impact our employees.
  • Regularly track, accurately, and within prescribed deadlines, company reports on matters within their responsibility.

Requirements:

  • Law degree.
  • 6+ years of experience in labour law and employment law.
  • Proven experience in collective bargaining and arbitration.
  • Fluency in both official languages (English and French).
  • Proficiency in computer tools and applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while being able to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact with diverse personalities, demonstrating tact, maturity, and flexibility.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively, both orally and in writing.

Work Environment:

  • Work from home, with potential travel up to 75% of the time.
  • May be required to travel to the United States.
  • Must be able to move within the office and between floors, use standard office equipment, access the filing system, and communicate effectively in person or by phone.
