Position Overview
The primary role of the Field Survey Technician is to support a Survey Technician in various manual and technical tasks associated with diverse survey projects, encompassing both fieldwork and office responsibilities. This is a temporary full-time position.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist a Survey Technician in surveying various locations including streets, parks, and other designated areas. Responsible for operating and maintaining surveying instruments such as total stations, survey controllers, and basic hand tools.
- Engage in physical tasks such as locating survey markers, staking, and clearing obstacles from survey sites.
- Implement traffic control measures, including the development of basic traffic management plans and setting up necessary traffic control devices.
- Maintain accurate field notes and sketches; perform computations and calculations as needed.
- Conduct office tasks including data entry and basic drafting using AutoCAD.
- Carry out field investigations, manage filing, and facilitate the transportation of equipment and supplies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of secondary education with coursework in mathematics or pre-calculus, combined with relevant survey-related experience and training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with the methods, techniques, and equipment utilized in municipal surveying.
- Understanding of office procedures and practices.
- Good knowledge of municipal water main system design and construction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and demonstrate tact and diplomacy with the public.
- Capability to follow directions from various survey technicians and execute tasks efficiently and safely.
- Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and drafting engineering drawings.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete work neatly and promptly.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of surveying equipment.
- Physical capability to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including lifting and transporting equipment over uneven terrain.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work safely in traffic and construction environments.
Driver's License and Record Checks:
- A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is required for this position, without any restrictions that could impede job performance.
