Position Overview

Digital producers play a crucial role within the digital division at the Toronto Star, tasked with the responsibility of curating, enhancing, and disseminating Star journalism to ensure it resonates meaningfully with our audience and the broader community. This includes optimizing content for various platforms, including newsletters, mobile applications, social media, and other emerging channels.

Key Responsibilities
  • When overseeing the homepage, curate and edit the content lineup across desktop, tablet, and mobile platforms, ensuring a balanced mix that aligns with newsworthiness, brand identity, audience preferences, and engagement metrics.
  • Innovatively produce and package stories to captivate our audience.
  • Adapt content in real-time based on audience engagement trends on social media, tailoring material for each platform to maximize interaction.
  • Generate fresh content based on current events or in anticipation of news, while proposing and implementing creative enhancements to The Star's journalism.
  • Align content strategies with SEO and social media best practices, analyzing reader behavior to expand our audience reach and sharing insights with colleagues to inform content development.
  • Monitor stories identified for special focus, providing metrics to evaluate effectiveness and celebrate significant achievements.
  • Collaborate with senior management and department leaders to strategize optimal timing for content release and promotion, while mentoring colleagues in these practices.
  • Foster a culture of growth, demonstrating enthusiasm, and supporting team members in their roles.
  • Uphold the core values of the Toronto Star and adhere to the Atkinson principles.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven expertise in news gathering and presentation at high-traffic news websites, demonstrating the requisite skills, knowledge, and capabilities outlined above.
Compensation

$59,316.61-$72,602.07

This position adheres to the collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M, with a standard work week of 35 hours as stipulated in the agreement.
