About the RoleReporting to the Provincial Medical Executive Director, the Department Heads (DH) for Family Practice are jointly accountable for overseeing the operations of the Family Practice Medical staff within the Zone. This role involves strategic and operational planning, as well as providing service leadership in collaboration with relevant administrative Department leaders. The DHs are responsible for guiding the Department of Family Practice network leads, managing performance, and planning physician resources for department members.
Key Responsibilities- Ensure adherence to NSHA Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, including the approval of credentials, managing complex applications, and addressing CPSNS restrictions.
- Conduct regular departmental meetings and provide meeting minutes to the Provincial Medical Executive Director.
- Engage actively in relevant committee meetings such as ZMAC, Clinical Affairs, Zone Council, Network Council, and LTC MAC meetings.
- Co-lead strategic and operational planning and budgeting, collaborating with Health Services Managers and Leads.
- Guarantee service continuity through effective scheduling practices, including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
- Monitor standards, quality, and resource utilization within the department.
- Manage performance evaluations for all department members.
- Address complaints and disciplinary actions for department members.
- Support the medical education mandate by recruiting physicians for teaching roles, participating in the Dal Medical School Committee, and coordinating medical residents and students.
- Contribute to clinical services planning and support the management of various clinics within the zone, advocating for the healthcare system and bridging Acute Care and Community Care.
- Lead recruitment and retention initiatives, including identifying opportunities, managing recruitment processes, handling retirement transitions, and addressing the needs of new recruits.
- Ensure the completion of onboarding processes for new hires, with support from the Specialty Site Lead as necessary.
- Organize regular IMMR for the Department in collaboration with Organization Performance.
- Participate in and support the implementation of the Provincial Primary Care Strategy, focusing on transformation, modernization, and addressing physician issues within the zone.
- Engage in leadership development initiatives.
- Perform all duties with an understanding of EDIRA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation, and Accessibility) principles.
- MD licensed in Nova Scotia and privileged with Nova Scotia Health.
- Demonstrated evidence of past and ongoing leadership training.
- Community-based Family Physician with experience in healthcare settings (including but not limited to community health centers, outpatient clinics, rural healthcare facilities, etc.) where primary care is delivered directly to local populations.
Each position is 0.5 FTE, and individual compensation will be determined based on prior experience.
