Position Overview:

The Fleet Services division operates primarily from a fully equipped garage, employing around 150 professionals across various trades. As a Commercial Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will collaborate with the Fleet and Manufacturing Services team to deliver high-quality and timely maintenance and repair services to our clients. This dynamic environment offers a diverse range of tasks, including servicing small and heavy equipment, automobiles, light to heavy trucks, trailers, and other fleet-related work.

The City of Vancouver encourages ongoing education and professional development for all employees. The Equipment Services division provides excellent training opportunities, including dealer training on newly acquired fleet equipment, aimed at enhancing skills, knowledge, and competencies.

Work Schedule:

The standard work hours are from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday through Friday. Candidates may need to adjust their shifts and locations based on operational requirements.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement.
  • Red Seal certification is preferred.
  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by relevant technical courses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trades.
  • Comprehensive understanding of braking systems.
  • Significant awareness of safety hazards and proper precautions within the trade.
  • Ability to execute a variety of complex electrical and mechanical tasks related to the overhaul, repair, maintenance, and adjustment of motorcycles, automotive, heavy-duty equipment, and marine electrical systems.
  • Capability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions, including sketches and diagrams.
  • Skill in requisitioning parts and materials.
  • Proficiency in operating vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Competence in inspecting and testing City vehicles for roadworthiness, adhering to provincial standards.
  • Expertise in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment relevant to the trade.
  • Physical agility, coordination, and strength to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Exceptional mechanical aptitude.

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record.
  • A valid Class 1 or 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement is an asset.
  • Candidates must provide a Commercial Driving Records Abstract and Insurance and Claims History for the past five years.
