Position Overview:

The Community Support Specialist is dedicated to delivering counselling services to individuals within the Spruce Grove area, emphasizing single-session support. This role includes providing limited assistance to navigation staff. The Community Support Specialist employs a strength-based, attachment-aware, and trauma-informed methodology in offering short-term, client-focused counselling services. Collaboration with community partners is essential to identify service gaps, share resources, and address the needs of the community. Supervision for this position is provided by the Manager of Individual and Family Support Services.

Key Responsibilities:

Counselling Services

• Conduct confidential intake assessments for residents seeking counselling to evaluate service eligibility.

• Deliver trauma-informed, client-centered counselling sessions for individuals aged 14 and older, adhering to the therapist's scope of practice.

• Ensure proper consent is acquired prior to counselling sessions.

• Identify at-risk clients requiring additional interventions and ensure appropriate referrals and supports are provided.

• Facilitate 50-minute or 100-minute counselling sessions that are trauma-informed, client-centered, and utilize evidence-based practices.

• Refer clients to community-based navigation services as needed.

• Offer single-session counselling services to residents in the Spruce Grove area.

• Utilize bio-psycho-social assessments to determine session focus and client-defined goals.

• Frame sessions using SMART goals to guide residents on their next steps.

• Employ assessment tools such as PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5, etc.

Coverage Support - Client Support and Navigation Services

• Provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support, advocacy, and service coordination for clients facing complex social challenges.

• Conduct bio-psycho-social assessments to identify necessary resources and supports.

• Collaborate with clients to create a comprehensive, client-centered service plan, led by the client.

• Offer ongoing support to clients in executing their self-identified service plans.

• Mentor and coach clients in self-advocacy, negotiation, and accessing necessary supports, including medical, social, mental health, financial, and housing services.

• Deliver services through mobile and outreach methods in partnership with various community organizations throughout the region.

Community and Partner Relations

• Foster relationships with community agencies and organizations focused on mental wellness.

• Collaborate to develop effective program evaluation and reporting for the Counselling Services program, including creating program logic models and outcome measurements, as well as data collection tools and evaluation practices for continuous improvement.

• Contribute to social planning initiatives and strategies as a Subject Matter Expert in mental health areas, including attachment, trauma, and evidence-based practices.

• Conduct group workshops on mental health and wellness topics.

Professional Accountability and Organizational Administration

• Maintain accurate outcome measures from client and community interactions for municipal and provincial reporting.

• Retain client information in compliance with departmental standards, provincial regulations, and professional licensing requirements.

• Ensure active licensing with the professional licensing body, including fulfilling ongoing professional development requirements.

Qualifications:

• Graduate Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counselling (preferred).

• Full registration with a licensing body/college in good standing.

• Registration with various insurance providers and/or the ability to meet criteria for reimbursement of client-related counselling expenses.

• 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in clinical counselling.

• Direct experience working with vulnerable populations and Indigenous individuals.

• Proven experience in trauma, depression, anxiety, and family work.
